Alright I posted this thread a while back, and I decided that I'm just going to pool my birthday and my Christmas money to make a completely new build. I have a budget of $400, and I want the best gaming computer possible with that budget. I want computer parts, I already have a mouse/keyboard/monitor/speakers so I don't need a new one of those.

I was thinking about maybe a 150-200GB HDD, or even 100GB if you need extra money to focus on other parts. I'm very efficient on space, and have gotten along fine with my 60GB.

If you could provide links to them (doesn't matter from where) that would be great.

If you already have 400$, you might want to save up even more so you can a better computer. Because 400 dollars really isnt going to get much for gaming wise. But i will edit my post and see what i can get.

in this order from top to bottom. Cpu, motherboard,Powersupply, memory, case, graphics card.

This is the best I felt like doing lol I think its an ok build. It should run some games, but I really do feel like you should save up more like I am.

I left out the Hard drive because im not too sure when it comes to them. And the budget makes it kind of difficult.

total comes to 417.94 (USD)

It's the graphic card which eats up the most out of your budget. If you play light games then you might squeeze by it.

Well I most likely won't be, that's why I'm upgrading my computer to begin with.

I suppose I should clarify, I'm intending on getting a 64-bit OS in the future, but currently do not have one.

I personally don't care much about the case. The case to me is a thing to hold my computer together. I don't intend on looking at it much, and would like to get the cheapest case as possible to make more money for other things.

Improving on Yaoi's suggestions...

ASUS 9600GSO - $35 - blows the 9400GT away, and its $12 cheaper after MIR
Corsair CMPSU-400CX - $40 - More than enough for this build and Corsair quality
GA-MA790GP-UD4H - $100 - Bit expensive, but open-box screams no at a lot of people
Corsair XMS2 4GB kit - $50 - XMS2 performance, cheaper after MIR
WD 500GB 7200RPM HDD - $60 - $20 more for a 500GB drive with a 32MB cache. 8MB cache hard drives are pretty slow, even if they're rated for 7200RPM.
Cooler Master RC-690 - $70 - expensive, but free shipping. For $30, this is not a bad choice either.
Optical drive from old computer (if it has at least DVD reading capability). If not, this will do.

The AMD Athlon II X4 620 looks like a good deal for quad-users on a budget. $455 subtotal (not accounting for the optical drive), although you could cut back to the GA-MA770T-UD3P, reducing the price to $425.

What if I get this triple combo deal, then I still have about $130 to put on RAM and a PSU. I think for a case, I might just end up either using superweapons' cheap one, or maybe just keep my own.

Well that is a good deal but it is duo core compared to the quad cores we recommended. But Also you would need a power supply with at least 450 watts to power a 4850.

The CMPSU-400CX offers 30 amps on the +12v rail, more than enough for the HD4850 or HD4870. Also, that dual core fails in comparison to the Athlon II X4 quad core. The HD4850 in the combo deal seems expensive when compared to the HD4870 which can be found at the same price.

ICorrect me if im wrong but the 4850 needs 450PSU requierment. Regardless of amps on that psu its only 400.

Considering that the 4870 only uses around 125W and 10.8A under load, the 4850 can only use less. The other parts in the previously posted combo aren't going to get anywhere near maxing out Corsair's 400W PSU.

It should probably also be noted that, with the right mobo, you can potentially unlock the 550's other two cores. It would appear that AMD took some working 940-equivalent CPUs and disabled 2 cores for most of the 550s.

EDIT: The mobo in the combo would appear to be capable of unlocking the extra cores assuming you use a modded BIOS.

I'm assuming that would be extremely risky, and simply not easy.

So what about this:
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103706

Then which card is better, the 9800 GTX+ or the HD4770?

Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138146

RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148216

HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136075

PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817184008
I don't know much about PSUs, but I was wondering if that would be enough power to support my build. If that would work, that would be great because then I end up paying $9 for a PSU (after mail-in rebate), and have $30 to spend on something else.

Again, I think I might just use the case I already have.

well if your going to get the 9800GTX+ just get the GTS 250, its just a rebaged 9800GTX+ but uses less power and performs better.
