Here's a 4 part tutorial on how to make a 3d rotating avatar like this (see below), but in cinema 4d. If you're looking for the same tutorial but for 3DS Max, go here.
Please note: This is not an in depth tutorial, it'll only glance over some of the basic features of the program.
You can experement with textures and such on your own, this is just an introduction to the basics. As you can see mine doesn't look overly great, as it was just a quick runthrough.

Additional note, my voice isn't that retarded (with the sssssssss's), it's just the program I was using to record has a high mic sensitivity.
If you don't have CS2 PS or higher, watch part 4 here, it'll show a similar thing being done in imageready (exactly the same method though).
