Atom is fine for a netbook, just web surfing and other crap. But if you try to run other CPU intensive programs like games or Adobe CS, chances are that you'll lag a bit.
Personally, I'd go for Core 2 Duo or Pentium Dual-Core.

Yeah, the Atom is for netbooks, which are completely useless unless all you want to do is surf the web a bit and read your emails.
My advice is to avoid them completely, and fork out some extra cash for the laptop. It's a much wiser investment.

Don't buy a netbook if you want to play games on it. I got one because they're small. And cheap.
You can get a Core 2 Duo 15" for like 500-550 if you find a sale (they're often on Lifehacker, search for the tag "Dealhacker").

well, the core2duo was PHP29,000 and the atom was just PHP19,000
atom is all i can afford for now, if ill buy core2duo, it might take some time for me to save that much money, i might even borrow money from my parents
the atom is 1.6Ghz, can i play other games that require less than 1.6GHz?
just like you said, my laptop might lag a bit if i play games, does this apply to all games or only to games that require high memory?
as for games, i dont play crysis, cod4, and those other games
i only play games from these sites:
http://www.e-games.com.ph/Content/Portal/Home4.aspx
http://www.levelupgames.ph/index.php
http://www.mygame.ph/main/index.asp
is there an external videocard? cause the video card memory is too small

The Nvidia ION based netbooks uses a mobile GeForce 9400 gpu to run graphic related applications where Intel's own Intel GMA950 can't compete.
So far there are 2 netbooks with Nvidia ION, Samsung and Lenovo.
According to the web, they all say their coming out soon where Lenovo's press release says sometimes this summer, but I doubt you'll be able to actually get your hands on it as it's most likely vaporware.

You won't be able to play any games whatsoever on a netbook. It will most likely have a 32MB onboard graphics adapter, and a 1.6GHz Atom isn't the same as a 1.6GHz Core 2 Duo - the Atom has a bunch of aggressive SpeedStep style features designed to increase battery life that will play havoc with any game's performance. You'd be immensely lucky to get good performance in Diablo 2.
You can't get an external video card either. Video cards require shared memory that can directly be accessed through a dedicated bus, which the board could not supply to an external card such as a PCMCIA.
Take our advice - if you want to do anything remotely taxing (any form of gaming, lots of tabs in Firefox, watching movies, etc) buy the laptop.

It really depends. Lots of games that aren't incredibly resource-intensive or 3D-driven are very playable on the netbook. I own an ASUS EEEPC 1000HE with an Atom N280 (not much different from the Atom N270 you were describing), and ASUS has a utility for CPU frequency scaling (for power saving) to light overclocking (although you could go further pretty easily, I'm sure).
If you need me to test a certain game, I could do that for you. Got time.
EDIT:
It's got the Intel 945GSE chipset, which isn't great but I don't game much.
To the ext. videocard: simply, no. Especially not worth "saving money" on the original computer.
EDIT:
@Burningmace, it's up to 224MB shared memory. I don't know where you got 32MB from.
Also, this forum might help you find out if what you're looking for is supported by various netbooks. They're all pretty much the same anyway, at least for now.

224MB shared means including what it steals from the RAM. It's likely to have 64MB dedicated VRAM and 160MB of additional memory in the RAM.
This doesn't really matter though, because it's an integrated netbook graphics card. You're not going to run any game on it that was made in the past 6-8 years.

My classmate had Sony Vegas on a Lenovo S10e, dont..., its very laggy when messing around with effects. He simply never used it. He made all the editing at home, and he was only able to preview the exported movies...

I have an acer aspire ONE with an intel atom dual 1.6ghz core, and I game on it. Sadly you can only play games with pixel/vertex 2.0 or lower, and it has no HW TnL support. But I manage to play games easily with minimum lag using 3d analyzer to force SW TnL.

You can't run Sony Vegas on a Netbook, it just won't work.
EVE Online has a very well written graphics engine that allows you to scale down to very low spec machines, but you'll still require a decent netbook to run it. A 1.6GHz Atom with an onboard video card is not likely to cut it.
It's obvious you're looking to play games and do sound/video editing. Once more - buy the laptop.
