|
|
So, my next project is to program and extend a robot.
We're supposed to program it with Python. No biggie, but there's a competition. "Who can program/build the best robot". We need it to get through serveral obstacle-courses, which we don't know about yet. So we can't just program it to follow a certain pattern.
I need some idea's for abilities to give my robot, so it can get through every obstacle it might meet. It looks a little like the iRobot Create , but is built by my school.
So, you got any ideas of features that would be great to have on the robot? So far I got the basics, Forward, fast forward (and backwars), turn, "hyperspeed", and we're working on a jump function. We're allowed to do almost anything to the robot. Put arms on it, or whatever we'd like. So, I need some suggestions :)

Is it a fake robot (remote controlled) or a real robot (uses pre-programmed functions to navigate)?
I would put something on it to sense how far away something is... Ultrasonic sensors, IR sensors, a camera etc...

A laser beam to wipe out competition.
No seriously, are you allowed destructive stuff like a hammer taped to a torque motor?
Or maybe add something on the front that will bust through obstacles, like a scoop.
As for navigation, I would for sure make three chassis, and have them extend-able to crazy heights.
Genius for scaling walls.
(Attachment is a bit exaggerated but you get the point.)

We're using pre-programmed functions. Well .. We type some commands in python, which becomes "translated" into binary, so the machine is able to read it. Originally you were supposed to give it commands via the binary system, but we changed it so you could do it with something alike pre-programmed functions. We already stuffed it with a basic sensor, so it reacts if it bumps into something, and it can turn around and approach the target in a new way (we have manual, and automatic movement).

Not that I think a huge hammer is gonna help it, due to it will be a lot less agile, but in the theory, we are allowed, and we could :b Tho we have been thinking on implementing a tiny shovel-like thing underneath it, so it could tip the others robots, hehe :)

Genius for scaling walls | Well .. Yea.. But that's gonna take alot of time to actually make it work in real life :b But our robot has some wheels that you can move around. So we thought of putting on some little torque engine thingy, and make it able to do tiny jump-motions.
Anyways, I'm happy for your ideas, and I'd like to see more. After we're done with the project, we get to play with out robots. So I might try and actually give birth to some of the crazy ideas :b

How about a speakerbox that streams audio from say your laptop?
You could blare music or yell at the other robots.
/useless
Here's a weapon-ish idea that would be simple to build:
A compartment on the back of the bot with a gate that drops on command, allowing objects like landmines to drop out and hinder other robots.
And by landmines I mean something like those little jax toys.
They cunningly depict anti tank barriers and would add a comical war theme to the project.

If he puts all of the stuff you suggests... I hope he is ready to get funding for a VERY expensive robot...
Also, what is a "torque motor", if i recall correctly all motors give off torque.

A torque motor is a motor used specifically for torque.
It's designed to bear heavy loads and still accelerate.

Well the robot already has a tiny speaker in it. We just thought of adding some music, but hell yea, we are gonna add some insults ! And I like your mine idea, but I don't think it's worth the work really. Looks cool, yea, but the other robots can just drive around it without any big trouble. I might add it after the project tho, because I like it :b
- Oh, and we also need a name for it .. ? We thought of going slacky and just call it Wall-E x) But any suggestions?
