You can't burn a movie to a CD-R and use it in a DVD player. Did you mean a DVD-R?

If you want to play it on your DVD Player then try Data Burn it and run it on your DVD.
If that doesn't work then your going to have to get a converter to change the format, codec etc to run on your DVD Player...

I'm pretty sure CD-Rs in general do not play on DVD players...

You'll need to use Nero Vision Express if you want to play on your stand alone DVD player.
And Janji is right, CD-R can be play on it too.
Most DVD players can read (S)VCD which is made from CD-Rs.
