An SSD is basically an over-sized USB, since they both uses flash memory. However since SSDs uses SATA or eSATA to connect to the computer it will definitely be faster than USB drives.

SSD stands for solid state drive. They use flash memory there for they don't have disk's that spin. Usually one would install an OS on a solid state drive.
SATA aka serial ata is basically just a cord that goes straight from a drive into your motherboard. And these wont spin in RPM's because they are a cord hahaha.
External ssd is the way to go. But i would personally go for an internal ssd. _________________
