When I plugged the USB port of a portable hard drive into my computer, all of the lights on the motherboard lit up and every fan went to full speed, and keyboard, monitor and mouse stopped working. I had heard that static electricity on a USB port can lead to static damage to the motherboard so it scared me a lot and I quickly turned the PSU switch off. Upon unplugging the portable hard drive and turning the computer back on it's behaving normally again (which is a gigantic relief)... what could've caused that?

your power supply should trip if you somehow manage to short the motherboard.

your system may have just crashed.

Thinking it was just some crazy random [Windows-related] crash. If no problems persist, it should be fine...
