|
|
This is my first time purchasing a Netbook computer and I'm bogged down by the number of different computers there are. I have no clue as to a good company but I've been using Dell Laptops and HP/Compaq Desktops all my life.
Do you have any reccomendations as to which Netbook I should purchase?
What I want to use my Computer for:
Word Processing (OO3 or Word 2007)+Powerpoint+Excel
Listening to Music
Open Liero X
Watching Anime
~Possibly Stepmania
Interface:
Simple and Easy to use
OS:
I've used both Windows and Linux (I don't mind).
My price range is anywhere up to $1000 (but no more).
However cheaper is better.

Netbooks don't cost $1000, you're looking more in the $400 range.
Now, if you want a true netbook, pick up an ASUS EeePC 1000HE, around $385? I'm using one now, all it took was a little getting used to with the lower resolution (from my regular 22"). The keyboard is very good, and the chicklet keys probably won't ever pop off or get disgusting underneath. 92% normal sized keys isn't something to be concerned about.
Great feature set, including buttons to (1) turn off the screen, (2) change resolution (1024/600, 1024/768, 1024/768 compressed (vertically), and 800/600), and two user buttons, the first of which changes the performance scheme with the "Super Hybrid Engine" utility for over/underclocking.
You can overclock the PC further than with the utility for best performance with a simple tool.

Netbooks are used primary for simple/light basic task. Anything intensive and the machine will bog down.
Netbooks are for those who already own a computer.
According to a mag benchmarking a encoding task, the difference in time to complete the task in a notebook vs a netbook are:
Encoding task (time to complete)
Netbook: Nearly 2 and a half hours!
Notebook: little more than 30 minutes

$385 is very nice, I'll check the price of the ASUS EeePC 1000HE at my local Computer store. Are you sure it can do the above in the list though?
@kls85: I'm only using the netbook for greater portability than my laptop. I don't plan to encode.

As far as netbooks go, the Asus 1000HE is just about as good as they get, although it's in the more 'expensive' part of the netbook price range. Honestly, I would recommend looking for Ion-based netbooks (such as the Samsung N510), even if hugely increased graphics capabilities is not what you're looking for. Even better, wait for netbook distributions of Windows 7 in order to take advantage of the extra performance.
If you have $1000 to blow, I seriously recommend looking into smaller-sized entertainment notebooks (~14" is about the sweet-spot). It's a much better use of your money (unless, of course, your goal is to save that money). Performance will be inherently better, although battery life and size may suffer a bit.

It can easily do everything you asked about (although Office '03 might be a better choice if it's up to you). I personally have 2007 on mine since I could only find a 2003 Basic CD laying around the house.
If you don't want to play any heavier games (albeit older, things like Diablo II, DoTA, etc.) or watch higher-quality videos more smoothly, I don't see a need to get a (more expensive??) Ion-based netbook, especially when they're so new on the market.
A 2GB 800MHz SODIMM will only cost about $25 if you're interested.

Thanks for your help guys, I ended up buying a Dell Inspiron Mini because my dad was willing to chip-in $400 for his favourite computer brand and that brought the cost for me down to $200.
