I might decide to build my own pc but I'm not really sure what parts to get that would work well for gaming and are affordable. Here is a list of a few things i want to get.
Case: Not sure
Motherboard:GIGABYTE GA-MA790X-UD4P AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 790X ATX AMD Motherboard
Processor:AMD Phenom II X4 940 Deneb 3.0GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core Black Edition Processor (is this processor any good and does the stock fan run well?)
Graphics: Radeon HD 4870 1GB
Power:OCZ StealthXStream OCZ700SXS 700W ATX12V
Hard drive:Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache
Memory:CORSAIR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X4096-6400C5
OS:Vista Home Premium 64-bit
I know I'm missing a few things but would this be a good build?
All of these things cost $741.41

if you are using quad core 3.0 and Vista 64 better double your ram at least
get the same ram but 4 x 2GB, you will have 4 slots to put ram in your motherboard
-----------
as long as you dont overclock the Fan that comes with the processor should be fine

mmmm ok would it be any different with the 32-bit version because i dont feel like spending much for ram (even though it's not that expensive lol).
Do you know any decent cases that would fit all of this stuff?

Wat. No. 4GB of RAM is fine.

Good AMD mobo, I approve.
Processor:AMD Phenom II X4 940 Deneb 3.0GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core Black Edition Processor (is this processor any good and does the stock fan run well?)
The processor is slightly faster than the Q6600 clock for clock by about 2% (Q6600 overclocked @ 3.0GHz ~= Phenom II 940 underclocked @ 2.94GHz or so), so it fits the budget for an $800 build quite well. It's still significantly slower than the i7 920, but that's out of this price range. The stock fan's fine if you don't want to overclock; if you decide you do, look for a Xigmatek HDT-s1283, which is arguably the best bang-for-your-buck CPU cooler on the market today, probably allowing 3.7-3.8GHz or so.
Graphics: Radeon HD 4870 1GB
Good. Be sure you can't find a GTX260 for cheaper, since it performs almost identically. Not sure what the prices of each are at the moment.
Power:OCZ StealthXStream OCZ700SXS 700W ATX12V
Christ, 4 +12v rails? Do not want. Take a look at Corsair's 550W PSU, which should be more than enough to run almost any system, including this one. It's about $5 more after rebate and much more solid than the one above. Also note that, with rebate, it's about $5 cheaper than Corsiar's 450W PSU. Go figure.
Hard drive:Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache
I approve.
Memory:CORSAIR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X4096-6400C5
I also approve.
OS:Vista Home Premium 64-bit
You could also consider Windows 7, since RC1's out at the moment. Don't get me wrong, Vista's a great OS, but Windows 7 is quite a bit better. |
EDIT: Oh yeah, case. If you're looking for a cheap, solid, no-bullshit case, take a look at this. It should do what you want.

Wow I overdid the power. I'll use the one you suggested. It's all I need I guess.
I checked the price for the 260 and it is like the same as the 4870.

Yeah I'm kindof confused about that. When I put it in the cart it gave me the games offer and slashed the card's price.
$10.00 instant
$99.98 saving?
What does that mean?
Well anyway I got two really good deals today at newegg.

The lowest prices for the HD4870 and GTX260 after rebates are $117 and $145 respectively. HD4870s are smaller and run cooler, however are a bit louder in most cases than GTX260s. To be honest, with the latest driver releases, I'm not sure which one is the fastest of the two at the moment. Hmm.
EDIT: I see what you mean. Normally, apparently, the "free" games would be $50 each (see this and this), but the total price of the items would still be ~$160 before rebates.
EDIT2: Now with sauce.

I'm getting the gtx unless those savings are a mirrage. I'm pretty sure the card will fit in this case anyway so size won't matter.
Ahh ok I see.
Are good sound cards worth it or could you do without one.

get 8GB of RAM >.> I know what I'm telling you.. if you want a good gaming computer get the most RAM you can and a Video card that supports Nvidia/Ageia PhysX and CUDA, this both physics engines will rape your RAM but they are still in development, PhisX is already being used and CUDA is still in underground development but will be a complete success in games.
