Okay so I'm moving into a new house and when I got there, I noticed there were still 2 Dish network cable still on top of the house.

And they look like this:

and one like this:

The difference is that one of them is a "Plus" and the other one is a "500"

I was wondering can I watch free cable with those?
And I'm not sure if they work or not because we haven't move into the house yet so I can't set the TV and see if we have any cable channels yet.

Okay, let say they shut the cable off, but we still have the cable dish, is there anyway I can do something to watch free cable channels?
Can I buy something to make it work again, and watch common cable channels, not like HBO or anything like that?

You would need a special cable box.

Yes you would need a Decoder, something that can decrypt the signal into the video that you see on your TV/PC... I never recommend buying a TV Tuner for your PC. Personally what I did was get an Electrician/CableGuy to check the dishes, they all worked, he rewired some of the cables for a low amount as he was sure the cables were going to cause lower quality... Then he used a portable TV while on the roof and repositioned the dish to point to the correct satellites in the sky. After he changed the cables and pointed the dish, he sold us a decoder and scanned for all the channels himself to be sure everything works properly... Yes they came with a charge but it was garanteed to work. I don't recommend you go on your roof and do any of those things as even the professional CableGuy was scared of actually getting off the ladder, as roofs may capsize at anytime...

I'm not quite sure, because my parents paid, but I think it cost $200 for everything... But he did a lot of work around the house...

Even if you do buy a cheap decoder box, you need to reposition the dish to the correct satellite, check cabling, and finally use the decoder...
Also he did a splitter for me, so I can watch TV in 2 rooms... And he went under the house to wire to the other room...

I live in Australia, so my parents wanted to receive TV from another country...
So we bought a decoder, used a dish already on our roof and the Cable Guy did it all... They are fairly clear, but we are using a fairly old looking dish...
If I were you I'd ask someone living in the same city, who have the same setup your looking for, to find out quality...

Oh, well are you sure it's a cable guy and not a regular technician?
Because isn't it illegal to do this, since you don't have to pay?
And, isn't the dish already position in the correct place since there was cable here before?

The channel's I were getting were 100% legal... I'm not sure what he was sorry...
The are million's of satellites orbiting earth giving out different signals, how do you know which is the correct satellite for the channels you want? How do you know where each satellite is?

Oh, well... guess I'm going to have to call the technician for this =/
Also, my friend said when he move into his new house, he noticed that the people before that live there cancel the cable, but the cable guy forgot to take this one thing off so he told me he bought something from the store and put it on the cable thing and he started getting free cable, illegally.

He said every month there will be a helicopter shooting this lazer thing to shut it off for people trying to do it illegally, not just him, but whenever they do that, he gets it back up working again.
