Seriously.
Like 15 minutes ago, my computer suddenly shutdown. When I rebooted, I found out the gay WGA notifications were installed, which I fixed in 5 minutes. I've waited long, very long, for my taskbar to show up and my precious desktop to show up. This has happened before, but I system restored to solve it. I'm guessing its the gay automatic updates.
What I have tried:
Terminating explorer.exe and opening a new one (Fail)
Rebooting (fail)
Waiting (fail)
What I do not want to try
Reformatting (Problem would come back)
System restore (precious data)

Reformatting would most likely help

If you can't seem to fix it and there's nothing left but to format and you don't want to lose you data, just burn a live CD of ubuntu, boot it up, and backup your files onto a thumb drive or something.

It's also possible you have corrupt system files.
I'd go ahead and stick in your Windows disc, boot from CD, and run the system file check/recovery module.

Try boot up your XP installation CD and do a repair installation.

Edit: The first one failed. Now trying the link.

I had it too a year or 2 ago. I scanned my computer for viruses with AVG and it found a file called rrss.dll or something, I can't remember it very well. Anyways, I deleted it and rebooted. My taskbar was back then. It's somewhere in System32
I know it sounds a lot like the fake hal.dll story, but this is real.
