It does have to do with computers, it is an operating system.

This isn't spam.
Back on topic: I thought that Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope was the most-used Operating System? Maybe only a few linux fans dislike it. I probably would've tried out Ubuntu myself, but it seems that it's not compatible with a lot of Windows programs.

Overall, it's extremely bloated; many unnecessary packages are setup and configured by default on most revs of Ubuntu. Debian is a slimmer choice, and I personally find easier to setup, with more choice over manual customization.

Agreed on the bloated part. Also, DKMikey, it's quality not popularity. Just because it's the most used Linux distribution does not mean it's the best.

It's true, Ubuntu is the most popular linux distro. But since when has Linux based popularity off how good things is?
ie, everyone uses Windows, not Linux...
Also, Linux is not compatible with Windows programs, because Linux isn't Windows..... >.> That should have been straight forward.
It is bloated, but some Distros are disgustingly... the opposite.
You get on the machine and you have nothing. But it's not that bad, as long as you aren't brand new to linux.

That's exactly why I like Arch Linux

I have a question about linux...
can you run Windows programs on linux ?
because if you can't I would find linux pretty useless for my needs
since there are just a few programs I use that have versions for linux...

you cannot run windows programs on linux. There is of course Wine, a small program that runs some windows applications on linux but don't expet it to run photoshop or anything

There are a few programs out there that can run Windows programs. Not just wine.
Some specializing in games, some specializing in general stuff.
There are also a lot of OPEN SOURCE counter parts to programs for linux.
Word -> OpenOffice
IE -> anything but IE
etc etc

Well said - Arch I'm a huge fan of.

WINE runs many, many Windows applications; it has support for Direct3D even.

Gentoo has a steep learning curve; if you're still new to working with a distro by purely command line, without any general knowledge of the package system, you may want to read up on the public documentation.

Yes, a la WINE, CrossOver, etc.

WINE is anything but small - Photoshop runs fine under WINE, as do many games; years ago, I played WoW, CS 1.6, CS:S, etc games under WINE alone.

And, open source isn't all there is; the web browser Opera, for example, is written for many specific Linux distros, and it remains closed source.

They actually aren't that slow: WINE is not an emulator, calls to Windows API and similar are just quickly altered to be calls to the equivalent available Linux libraries: Instead of DirectX, OpenGL is used, etc.
