XBitLabs wrote: | ATI, graphics business unit of Advanced Micro Devices, on Thursday announced third price-cut on its flagship ATI Radeon HD 4800-series graphics cards this year. The price drop is not really dramatic, but the company hopes that it will be enough to improve competitive position of the product family.
“ATI partners are offering fantastic deals on ATI Radeon HD 4800-class GPUs. This is great news for gamers contemplating upgrading their current graphics card,” said, Jay Marsden, a spokesperson for ATI/AMD.
From now on, official price of the ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB will be $109, ATI Radeon HD 4850 1GB will be priced at $119, the price of the ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB will vary between $125 and $175, ATI Radeon HD 4870 1GB will be available for $159 and the ATI Radeon HD 4790 1GB will be sold for around $200 and upwards. New recommended pricing was not announced for ATI Radeon HD 4830, 4870 X2 as well as proprietary graphics cards now available widely, such as ATI Radeon HD 4850 X2.
At present U.S. online stores, such as Newegg.com, are beginning to offer the aforementioned graphics cards at the prices noted above. Traditionally, price-cuts will take effect in Europe and Asia several weeks later.
ATI cuts prices on its mainstream lineup in order to respond to the global economic recession as well as to better compete against arch-rival Nvidia Corp. and its mainstream GeForce line. |
In other news around the web, a new ATi card is in the works called the HD 4790.
Specs are (according to a Chinese News site)

* 512MB GDDR5 memories clock at 3200MHz on 256-bit memory interface
* Performance between 4870 and 4850

i love how they made a nice, simple naming scheme and now they are complicating the fuck out of it.
logically, 48xx should always be faster than 47xx

Seems comflicting. The improbable Chinese news site states that it should be between the performance of the HD 4870 and HD 4850, but XBitLabs reports that it will cost $200, rivaling the current HD 4890. They both seem like bad sources at the moment. Unless, of course, XBitLabs' report is a typo (written HD 4790 instead of HD 4890).
I'm anxious to hear about the release price. NVIDIA has yet to release newer hardware to compete with the $100 segment effectively, ATI seems to be edging ahead. Perhaps the GT300 will be scalable enough to revive that budget area and satisfy the needs of enthusiasts.
An HD 4750 at about $60-$70 would help remove HD 4830's out of the system and pull to the newer fab, and help ATI directly compete with the aging 9600GT.
They also have to fix the naming. It's confusing unless you have all the performance charts stuck in your head. Conventionally, a number higher in the hundreds place would absolutely defeat a lower number.
