I will be buying either of these laptops and customizing them to about $2,000 USD.

http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/laptop-alienware-m17x?c=us&l=en&s=dhs

OR

http://www.alienware.com/products/area-51-m15x-notebook.aspx?SysCode=PC-LT-AREA51M15X-AI1&SubCode=SKU-DEFAULT

the first is more hardcore I guess, but it already comes with most things i want included (starts at $1,800)
The other one is less hardcore and more for casual use I believe (starting at $1,199) However I will still customize the second to about $2,000 worth. Which is the better pick? Keep In Mind: I most likely won't be lugging this anywhere with me so size is not much of an interference I guess.

I'd pick the second one because I find alienware to be sexy and dell to be much less than that.

Alienware is a branch of dell, or so I've been told. They are both Alienware either way.

I would get the laptop. You can't imagine how great it feels to lay in your bed and use a computer.

edit: If you want it for gaming, just get the laptop with a usb mouse, and put it on a table or some other solid surface when you want to play games. But otherwise, if you are just mindlessly browsing the internet or typing something up, you can just use the touchpad.

Oh, are they? Didn't really bother checking, just went by links. One sec, actually THINKING about each laptop (ugh).

I'd say go with the first one then, considering it's double as sexy as the second, and comes with more. Even though you'd be willing to put more into into the second, going with the first saves you some time.

Time isn't much of a problem either I guess, I want to make sure this is perfect. It has to last me quite some time.

Don't get either!

Laptops are horrible gaming devices. Blowing $2k on a gaming laptop is ridiculous, especially since it'll be too heavy for a mobile platform. It'll also be insanely overpriced, especially since you're buying it from Alienware (smaller vendors such as iBuyPower and CyberPowerPC offer far better parts for the same price). The power usage on those machines are too high while running on the battery under load. Laptops would be a bad choice, especially since you don't even want to move your gaming system. A mid-tower desktop or MicroATX desktop would be a great solution to your needs, and would be much cheaper while offering better performance.

For example, a Core 2 Quad system with a high-end GTX 260/HD 4870 would cost under $1000, around $800 (if you put it together yourself, that is). If you can wait for Core i5/Lynnfield in a few months, then your performance would probably be even better, for the same price.

Oh and by the way, the M17x is obviously far superior to the M15x (i.e. quad core processor offering), if you still want to waste your time (and a good $1k) with a high-end gaming laptop.

AlienWare is the #1 girlfriend repellent. I would go with the Dell (for other reasons, not just the girlfriend part)

Don't buy a gaming laptop. Build your own desktop for gaming. With less money, you can build a gaming desktop that will perform better than your prospective laptops. With the money you saved, you can get a normal everyday laptop.
