What currency are you meaning?
And I would invest all the money in one machine.

Assuming this is in USD:

1. Asus EEE PC
$300-400
1GB of RAM, can be upgraded to 2GB very cheaply.
160 GB Hard Drive.
Windows XP.
Small, light, long battery life. Small screen however, but,

2. Give me a budget and tell me what you want it to do and I'll throw together a build for you.

For $800, I'd probably go for:
E8400 ($168)
HD4850 ($95 after rebate)
GA-EP45-UD3L ($95)
450W Corsair PSU ($60 after rebate)
2x2GB 800MHz Corsair RAM ($47 - If you don't mind a rebate this is pure win for cheaper)
Antec 300 ($55)
640GB WD HDD ($70)
Leaving you $210 for a monitor/keyboard/Q6600/HD4870/HDT-s1283/etc.

I have a pretty decent wireless mouse/keyboard combo I got from botting a microsoft promo for a few days, and, really, unless you have a good reason for the keyboard/mouse to be wireless go for wired. Need to change the batteries pretty frequently, shit will randomly disconnect sometimes, etc.

The currency I mean is US Dollars.

Also, nah, I just want to decide whether I should get a laptop for $800, or a desktop.

Uhh well i mean the title is deceiving in laptop AND a desktop, but anyway on topic you should go with a desktop. Easier to exchange parts and cheaper parts.

Unless you have a good reason for getting a laptop, get a desktop.

Also, what do you plan to use the computer for and do you need a monitor?

Computer is going to be used for normal school stuff, downloading programs, games.

No, I don't have a monitor. Sad

This is the best I've picked out for under $800 and it was painful since a few items needs to be sacrificed.

AMD Phenom X3 8650...$78.99
Asus M4A78 Plus...$79.99
G.Skill 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 800...47.99
Sapphire HD 4830 1GB...$109.99
WD 500GB SATA 3G OEM...$59.99
LG 22x DVD writer OEM (SATA)...$23.99
Antec 650w 80Plus!...74.99
*** additional $10 off with promo code: "Maypsu10" ends May 28, 2009***
Cooler Master Elite 330 ATX case...39.99
Acer 19" widescreen LCD monitor...$109.99
Logitech EX110 wireless keyboard and mouse...$24.99
Note: If your having difficulities with the mouse and keyboard, then on the receiver, just plug in only the USB port and it will work with both devices. If you are using the USB header, then do no plug in the green PS/2 header as it will cause problems.
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit OEM...$99.99

sub total: $750.89
S&H: $30.75
Tax: none
Grand total: $781.64

All instant rebates are already subtracted.

I won't be buying home premium, so I guess that grand total is really $681.64

Great computer for that price. Is it very hard to build a desktop?

Hmm, maybe I'll try taking a class over the summer and see if I can do it.

Know any videos/tuts that can get me started?

What items needed to be sacrificed? With the -$100 of the OS, can we add the items that were sacrificed? Building your own computer seems MUCH better than buying a pre-built one.

Also, is it harder/much more expensive to build a laptop than a desktop?

EDIT: BTW, your wireless keyboard and mouse link takes me directly to the screen monitor link. Think you can fix that? Thanks.

With the OS out of the way you still can't really get everything back as the sacrificed items are: processor, graphic card, psu, and monitor

cpu: AMD Phenom II X4 810
gpu: XFX HD4850 1GB
screen: Acer 23"
psu: Corsair 650w 80Plus!

Here is the correct link to the keyboard/mouse

link

If you add all the things back then it will be an extra $201.07

I has a confused. The computer above sucks. Seems like the budget killed half of itself or something.

ANYWAY:
E8400 ($168)
HD4850 ($95 after rebate)
GA-EP45-UD3L ($95)
450W Corsair PSU ($60 after rebate)
2x2GB 800MHz Corsair RAM ($47 - If you don't mind a rebate this is pure win for cheaper)
Antec 300 ($55)
640GB WD HDD ($70)
Generic DVD burner ($24)
Acer 22" 5ms TN LCD monitor ($150)
which totals out to $764, then choose a mouse/keyboard combo from this.

kls, you don't need a 650W corsair PSU to power that. The Antec psu from before sucks, it has 3 weak +12v rails.

Do you even know how to calculate the +12v rails?
The total combined +12v rails on the Antec comes out to 45A, which is much stronger then the one you've picked at 33A.

Also 650w gives users more head room, incase if he decideds to add other devices in the future.

Also, yeah due to OP's budget, it's price over parts, so items needs to be given up.

Now if you calculate the items you picked, including S&H it will go over the OP's strict price range of under $800.

BTW, just added your parts without the OS, including the same Logitech wireless I've picked, and it comes out to $841.45 (including S&H)
Add the OS and it's $941.44

Some budget that is Rolling Eyes
