(Repost from temporary forum)

  • CPU: Intel Quad Core Q9550 $415
  • GPU: ATI 1GB 4870 Gigabyte $319
  • RAM: 4GB (2x2GB) Kingston $74
  • HDD: Seagate SATA 500GB $82
  • PSU: Coolermaster Extreme 600W $93
  • Case: Antec 1200 $295
  • Monitor: LG L246WHX $345

This is what I have decided on. However, I don't know shit about motherboards, and I obviously need one.

What do you think would be the best value for a price < $230 (AUD) from MSY? Also, any other comments about the build will be gladly accepted.

On the temporary forum, I only had one reply:

Asus P5Q Pro or Gigabyte EP45T-UD3P

I wouldn't mind hearing other people's opinions as well, so I'm reposting here.

I don't wish to bump, so here's an edit to say thanks to all who assisted.

My brother says the Gigabyte EP45T-UD3P also.
Infact, this whole computer I'm using was built from parts bought at MSY.

It doesn't matter too much though. As long as the mainboard is the correct slot for the processor it's good enough.

Just look into what other things you may want to do with it. SLI by nvidia? If so, make sure the board is verified.

If you want to do extreme overclocking you may want to look at that as well. E.g a mainboard with speed and voltage adjusting controls you can use at runtime, otherwise a mainboard that's 100$ cheaper would do fine

But besides that, check if it's the correct format. e.g atx and not btx, and no mini-atx. Unless your case is a mini atx case..

If you're going to get the Gigabyte UD3P, get the regular P45 model, not the DDR3 version.
Also, consider two 4830s if you don't plan on buying a second 4870. The two in Crossfire should easily beat the 4870, and if you're really set on the 1GB graphics memory, there are 4830 models with that amount (although it's probably not entirely necessary unless you're at a very high resolution).
The P5Q PRO is a good board, with tons of tweaks and things in BIOS. Are you going to be doing any overclocking, though?
