I have a dell single core 2.8GHZ. with 2GB ram, graphics card is an onboard peice of shit (Intel 82945G Express Chipset Family.) I wanted to upgrade it to 8GB Ram, then get a new graphics card for it, something like a 512MB card from Geforce. My harddrive has 80GB space.
Or I can buy an AlienWare for $900.
Dual Core. 1.8ghz
1GB GeForce graphics card.
200 GB harddrive.
4GB ram.

Yeah but not that alienware its pretty weak and expensive.
If you want to game you need a 2.4-3ghz dual core or 2.4ghz + quad core.
If you want a fast multimedia pc, quad core would be best
Also you want a decent graphics card, 1gb means nothing. You have to make sure you get a 9800/gts250/gtx 2X0 or 4850/4870 if you want to play the latest games. Which i assume you do considering you went to alienware.
Build it yourself or go to a better value prebuilt site, like dell? They are actually pretty good now.
If you dont want to make it yourself im pretty sure you can buy a barebone pc which just has case, mottherboard and psu, which means you can buy the rest of the parts separetely ( ram/gpu/cpu), and theyre like lego to fit into your pc.
If you look in the other thread, this is what you can get for the same price if you do it yourself
* CPU: Intel Quad Core Q9550 $415
* GPU: ATI 1GB 4870 Gigabyte $319
* RAM: 4GB (2x2GB) Kingston $74
* HDD: Seagate SATA 500GB $82
* PSU: Coolermaster Extreme 600W $93
* Case: Antec 1200 $295
thats AUS dollars so i think it works out about the same.

That alienware is crap. You have a 2.8 ghz single core, upgrading it to 8 gigs of ram would be a total waste. If you have $900, build your own computer. It's not hard, and I built my computer around the same price. (actually 880 with a 22" monitor.)
My specs are:
2.8 ghz Phenom II 920 X4 (OC'd to 3.4 ghz)
4 gigs DDR2 ram(You don't need 8 gigs to make it fast, anything over 4 gigs would be a waste unless you do servering/ HD video editing)
640 gb Hard drive
ATI Radeon 4830 512 mb 256 bit
Raidmax Smilidon case (it's a really nice case, check it out)
OCZ 700 W PSU
22" Acer LCD
64 bit Vista Ultimate (torrented)
(I actually paid about 40 dollars more because newegg charges tax to California citizens, so final price would be about 840 with shipping if you don't live in California.)
As you can see, 900 can go very far with building your computer. If you still want to get a prebuilt one, I'd suggest Dell, as I some decent deals on the Dell website.

If you decide to build your own, give a budget and we can help you out with the parts.

My friend said he could build me a computer for $300, like get the parts and etc. He said if I wanted to make it a really good one with all the stuff I wanted, I would need a really nice motherboard which would cost over $1000+

Well, a computer's performance is based on the money you put towards parts (for the most part), so it's up to you to decide what you want to accomplish with the hardware.
In other words, what programs or games do you want to be able to run, and how well?
