I'm building my first computer, and I kinda got how to do that.

My question is how would I get an OS onto it? Can I just plug in an old hard drive into the motherboard with a new hard drive. Transfer the Windows files into the new hard drive and then take out the old hard drive?

Or would I have to either buy the CD or find a cracked one?

If I get a cracked one, how would I install it into the computer?

Buy one. Old HD will have different drivers -> might cause problems, or get a legit CD from a friend.

Download a BOOTABLE OS and burn it to a dvd or a cd. Then when you are starting your new computer i think you have to press F12 and choose from a media device or something like that.

Right after it POSTs it will sit there and tell you there is no OS.

Put in a CD, hit something, it will boot to the disc

Was going to say Agreed.... But then I remembered SF will warn me again...
Yes This is correct.
If you have an OS Installation ISO file on your hard drive you can burn the OS to a DVD by using any popular burning tool such as Nero, Power/Magic ISO, Imgburn etc.
Once burnt onto Disc follow Slovach's instructions...

Windows7 is good. Very Few Errors, as I am running it now.

If not, try Linux.

Ubuntu 9.0.4 is out today I think, order a CD, download it, buy it whatever.

Ubuntu is a good OS

OR you could download Windows 7, it is great however Microsoft discontinued beta downloads so you will have to find a copy somewhere

ReactOS

Written from the ground up to look like windows, but it's not windows.

Or from your old computer, you can use a tool to extract your windows product key.
