I'm running xp professional.
It seems every time the computer updates itself (standard windows update), after it's done the computer doesn't turn on.
It's happened about 5 times now.
To fix it I've been using the recovery console on the xp disc, and using these commands:
Code: | chkdsk
chkdsk /p
fixboot
fixmbr
exit |
And it starts running perfectly again, until next update....
I've no idea what's causing it any any idea would be useful.

About your avatar...
Saw on a show once about those high-speed cameras.
They say it absorbs so much data that recording just for 30 seconds will take hours of playback.
topic: Try to clear out the Windows update record file.

Start -> Run -> '%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\' (No quotes) -> Open 'Data Store' -> Delete everything in there.
Restart and you'll have a clean update history.
There's also a 'Windows Update.log' I don't know what that does, but it's located at:
(Local Disc):\Windows\Windows Update.log

Sorry to bump an old-ish thread.
But I'm thinking it might have something to do with me patching uxtheme.dll a while back.
Didn't really think about it.
It worked fine until it updated.
Is there a way I can replace it with the one from the xp install disc then update it?
@oib111 FMS is?

You can do that, I think uxtheme patchers (if that's what you used) have an undo function to restore the original.
