(induring.)
PhysX is NOT going to be a selling point for me on these cards. It's fancy and looks good (when it's noticeable, like in Mirror's Edge), but like the author says, it's not a standard, so you can't compare it. Just something you get when you've got the Nvidia card, not something to GET the card over. I like where they're going with CUDA and its implementations, but again. Not a selling point.
Performance in games, however, IS a selling point, and the reason I'd go with the HD 4890. In a number of benchmarks, it's neck-and-neck with the GTX 285, and has higher frame rate in others (Fallout 3 wut). For the price, it does very well (especially at normal resolutions).
Nvidia is trying too hard to make their GPUs more than GPUs, in my opinion.

Going by the benchmarks, looks like the HD4890 is superior to me. The whole PhysX thing seems super gimmicky. No, really. Going by the Mirror's Edge promotional video comparing the same game played with and without PhysX enabled, it looks like the only thing of value it adds to the game is an unusual abundance of cloth that tears when you so much as look at it funny and a slightly more realistic explosion of glass every time someone decides to send something through it.
tl;dr of the article:
If you play shit at insanely high resolutions or have an unusual lust for Mirror's edge, get the nVidia card. If you play shit at a reasonable resolution (1920x1200 or lower) and don't care to buy into gimmicky crap that you'll likely never even encounter, get the ATi card.
