I think it is mostly based on your/the server's internet speed.
There is no magical way (eexcept for opening more threads, dunno how to do that in FF, sorry)

Most of the Firefox optimization things are bullshit, but have you tried using a download manager like FDM (or IDM if you want to pay for a better one)? That will ensure you're maxing out your internet connection. Like robedino said, your internet speed plays the biggest role, unless one connection to the server isn't enough.

Most of FMS are bullshit too. They tries to connect to multiple servers at the same time. If it doesn't find any other servers then it simply can't accelerate the download. It would then have to rely on the servers and your internet's cap.

Well, it depends how strong each connection to the server is and whether it fulfills your [potential] internet speed. For example, I have a 30megabit/s line, so something like IDM offers faster downloads from (most) servers.

Yeah, but not everybody doesn't have a line like yours.
I'm not saying that I don't, (I have 15mbit) but yeah.
Like stated above, there is no magical way to increase download speed.
Unless your willing to pay more money to your ISP.
