|
|
The UD3L has a ICH10 southbridge, the UD3LR has the ICH10R. The Intel site lists the ICH10 to be capable of 0/1/5/10 RAID arrays, but the manual for the Gigabyte UD3L (which shares a manual with the UD3RL), says that the drive setup section (for setting up the RAID array) is only for the UD3LR.
Should I just buy a GA-UD3LR if I want to set up a RAID array with it to be safe? Insight welcome.

But then you'll have to switch over to DDR3, which will be a huge mess. So no, I wouldn't recommend the UD3LR.
Oh, nevermind, I was looking at the EP45T model. The EP45-UD3LR looks pretty identical, and the only thing it seems to do is have the RAID controller and ICH10R southbridge, as you stated. I'd go for it.
The user reviews also seemed to point out the absence of a RAID controller on the UD3L model, and the UD3LR model isn't much more expensive before rebates anyways.
If you want RAID, you can get the UD3R model, which is actually a bit better than the UD3L in other places than RAID. The board layout is a bit different, although after looking over it, it seems like it will accommodate most components okay, although the northbridge heatsink might get in the way (of a CPU cooler), the CMOS battery will probably be a bit harder to reach with a dual-slot graphics card, and the FDD port moved a bit. The UD3R is about the same price after the mail-in rebate.

Yeah, I must have misread the Intel site, I guess.
The UD3R is a little better, but I think I'll just order the UD3LR since none of the features it offers over the UD3LR would be put to use (building for somebody else). All it really needs is a RAID controller to mirror a couple hard drives (insisted upon for some reason), and be able to run necessary software (which isn't very demanding). Just decided to throw in an E5200, HD3650, and 2x2GB DDR2 800 for good measure. Not a bad lower-end build, and I guess they use it for non-office things as well.
Thanks for the response, by the way.
