Well, I'm going to be making a purcase on a netbook soon. I'm not sure which one though. I'm stuck between an Asus EEE PC and an MSI Wind.

MSI Wind

Asus EEE PC

The only reason why I can't decide is because of the pros and cons of some of the books. The EEE PC has multi touch while the Wind doesn't. But the Wind has 802.11N network adapter and the EEE PC doesn't. I have been hearing that the speakers on the EEE PC are better but I just can't decide.

Asus has a 1000HE model that is superior. It features chicklet keys, improved keyboard (i.e. right shift key), battery life improvements (probably the redesigned Atom processor), 802.11n, slightly faster processor.

The MSI Wind is a bit lighter, but there is far less expandability compared to Asus 1000-line of netbooks. MSI's specific 945GSE-based motherboard using in the Wind limits memory to 1GB (shipped as 512MB onboard, 512MB SODIMM, IIRC), but Asus' 945GSE-chipset motherboard supports up to 2GB (shipped as 1GB SODIMM). You'll also want to check out which netbooks are easier to upgrade (if you intend to do so), some models (even if they're just a different color) can make things difficult for do-it-yourself-ers.

Its really depening on how much money you got.

But I wouldn't get the MSI wind.

As superweapons are sayin
either take the 1000HE if you need 3G (not otherwise)
or
take the 1000HA which have alittle downsides but none big.

Eitherway you probebly want to buy 1gb ram extra right away for
the best expirance.

There is a very nice dedicated forum for the msi wind, and 90% of people have upgraded their wind to 2gb of ram, so i dont know what your saying about expandability. The wind also comes with bluetooth if your into that thing.
The best bit about the wind is the overclock button which is built into the bios and from a quick press of 1 button, you can overclock to 8/15/24% (depending on what you chose), or underclock to 50%.

The eeepc is probably better, but they release a new model every week, and there has been just 1 or 2 releases of msi, which means you get far better support, and patches/bios upgrades.

Actually, i suggest you wait, its a bad time to buy a netbook since theres new techonology right around the corner and their will be the inclusion of touch screens and very good batterys as well as more efficient and quieter ones.

No you wont get better support with MSI wind.
And asus doesn't release one every week.
Its more like 1 every month or every second month.

You will get better support with the eee because many more got it and you can just ask in the forum.

Thanks for the opinion guys. I just need a netbook that will fit my needs. That is to do my school work, some programming, and surf the web. I do plan to upgrade to 2GB for either of the net books. I have been eyeing these netbooks since they were first released and I'm anxious to get my hands onto one. I mean, they already look like they have hardware that'll last for years to come. Some of them have 802.11N and bluetooth as well as a 1.3 megapixel camera and microphone. I heard you can get a mod installed on the EEE PC that enables touch screen, but it will void your warranty. The price for these net books seem about right after all. Right now, it all comes down to which one is better suited.

BTW, i plan to use linux on these netbooks so I should've said that earlier.

Nevermind what I said, I just checked it. It should support 2GB okay.

Alright thanks. One last question, does the MSI wind take 2 ram cards or 1?

It has two memory slots, but don't memory upgrades/changes void the MSI Wind's warranty? At least they used to... there's no memory cover, you have to take off the entire panel to get to the memory.

Oh, in that case. I guess 1GB more of memory won't make a difference for my needs.

The end user will need to contact MSI UK first, and we will approve case by case. Customer will have option to contact their reseller for upgrade, contact MSI for upgrade (fee applies) or upgrade themselves. If end user chooses to upgrade themselves, we will provide them with an instructional guide and list of approved components to use, plus a new modified warranty sticker. If they follow this procedure, then warranty will remain valid, however, they will loose the global travel warranty. This will be clearly explained to them.

However, remember:

If the customer damages unit in any way during upgrade, then warranty will be void.

However while UK users may get the benefits of the awesome MSI UK support, it is not the case for other regions. If you live in the US, anywhere else in Europe or elsewhere in the world opening up your Wind notebook will void your warranty - there is no other way to upgrade the memory.

Hmm, I live in the US so I guess I won't be able to upgrade.
