How do I access or run a certain program that is on a network, but at a different location?

Location A: (workplace)
2 system connected to a DSL router with static IP. Both computers can access the internet and communicate with each other via the local network.
A special program is installed on one of the systems.

Location B: (home)
A single computer with a broadband connection without that special program installed.

Question: How can I use the PC at home to run the program that's at another location?
I've heard you need remote software like RealVNC or PCanywhere, is that true?
Also If I'm able to run the software then where is the file saved to? My home machine or the machine that's located at the work place?

Another question...

Let say I have this special program installed on both my home and work PCs. I've work on a project at work, but was unable to finish it. Since I've go not time to copy it out I've decided to finished it at home. Is there anyway for me to access located located at my workplace and continue to work on it at home?

If yes, then do I still need those remote softwares or all I have to do is type in the IP address for my workPC just to access it?

I've tried to look online, but can find any straight answers, all they give are BS.

Please help
Thanks!

Yeah that can help me with my first scenario, but what about the 2nd scenario?

Scenario #2 (as an example)

Was creating a design with Photoshop at work, but couldn't finish it.
Went home open up Photoshop and like to continue on my work, but the file is at my work place.

Is there a way for me to use my home computer to access the work computer and open that file?

You can use a host to be able to access those files from home, that wouldn't be too hard, so long as the ISP allows for hosting. Have you tried setting up a simple server at all with some dynamic DNS program and a site to forward to your work IP?
Maybe a folder to sync to a flash drive from work will help just as much, though.

I've seen my one of my classmates done it before with his Windows 2000 desktop a long time ago, but I forgot how.

All he did was enable some network setting and that was it.
And all he had to do was open up IE, type in the IP address and he can access his files over the internet, but one thing was it's on the internal network so I'm not sure if it will work over at another location.

I think it's like a FTP server or something.

I'll try that out to see if it works.
