DailyTech has learned from industry sources that ATI, the graphics division of AMD, is working with its board partners and several major e-tailers to lower prices on some key products.
The ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB will drop $50 in price, from the $199 segment down to $149. It will compete in this price point primarily against NVIDIA's GTS 250 1GB rebrand using the old G92 chip, variants of which were used in the 8800GT, 9800GT, 9800GTX, 9800GTX+, etc. However, the HD 4870 has been shown to surpass the performance of NVIDIA's GTX 260 line, and value seekers may choose to leave NVIDIA for a better price/performance point.
The Radeon 4870 uses GDDR5 to provide more video memory bandwidth than the GTX260, even though it has more RAM, a wider memory bus, and higher clocked memory.
The ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB will drop to $129, and is designed to compete at the same price point as NVIDIA's GTS 250 512MB version. The Radeon HD 4830 will be replaced by another part soon at a lower price point.
ATI's price cuts are anticipated to take effect early this week. One of our sources indicates that NVIDIA and its partners will unveil GTS250 parts at the CeBit tradeshow in Hannover, Germany on Tuesday. |

About fucking time we get an affordable gaming card. Nvidia is full of shit, their new cards are so overpriced ( just like the 8 series a few years back ) Now that ati can actually compete, video cards are actually retailing at "sane" prices.

For two computers?
No shit. |
Well, knowing vman, he could be bullshitting. Just like when he used to say the core i7 was a dual core designed to save power. |
EDIT:
I concede. Good point. xd

ATi renames their CrossFire technology to CrossFire X as they have expanded their multiple GPU solutions to support 3 or up to 4 GPUS.
2 HD 4870 running together is called CrossFire X
2 HD 4850 is also CrossFire X
1 HD 4870 X2 and 1 HD 4870 = CrossFire X
2 HD 4870 X2 = CrossFire X
There are boards with 4 PCIe x16 slots which allows you to have 4 HD 4850s running in CrossFire X.

vman is a fucking troll.
His "expertise" isn't worth shit, and he's bragging about stuff he doesn't have.
Ontopic; Fuck, I just bought the GTX295 for my new tank, even though it's the only part I got at the moment. I still need to do some savings..

Dude, it does not mean you got your card for $100 at Fry's means all other places will be selling at the same price.
The price you bought at Fry's was probably a special deal, but it was not an official price cut set by AMD.
