FreeAgent Desk/Pro/Go/Extreme?
Go to this page, find your product, and download the files you need. (Click "Downloads" next to the product and get the setup.)

USB hard drives usually don't need software to run.
It's either your computer, or a faulty hard drive.
You could go and try to exchange it.

Format it and see if it run's you don't need driver's or any of the bloat ware crap...
All it doe's is install stuff that you don't need which eventually causes your computer to get confused in the long run after so much device driver's are installed.
In my opinion don't install any driver's that aren't important such as Video Card/Motherboard/etc...

Some ext. HD will come with their own build in software. This software is optional and it's up to the user if they want to use it or not.
Read your manual on how to disable it.
Software may including the following
-Easy Backup (Helps users who are not familiar with copy and paste)
-Encryption (If your ext. HD got stolen, the thief must enter a password to see you stuffs)]
-U3 (A mini based OS that let you do the basics like internet, typing, etc)
Note: Not all ext. HD will have them or include every feature.

I've had a small problem with my external HD in the past. For some reason, my USB port (slot? Whatever you call it) stopped working. I kept plugging it in and the computer did nothing as if I never plugged it in. I then plugged it into another USB port, and it worked. Weird.
I also have a different old pile of crap pc. It didn't seem to notice that I plugged my HD in. 10 minutes later it gave me a message about the USB ports not being some special high speed transfer kind of USB ports, so it won't work as quickly as it should. I then attempted just to get into a folder in the HD. I lost patience after about 5 minutes and have never bothered since.
