Some woman screwed up my computer bad. It was a Compaq computer with a pentium core, but something happened, and it wouldn't let me go onto the desktop. I'm not sure if it has to do with the hard drive, but when we gave the woman to fix the comp, it seems she put windows 98 on it. I Don't know why, but I'm pissed . How can I fix this? When I try to turn it on, it brings me to a black screen with text that says something like:
Normal Mode
Safe Mode
Safe Mode With Command Prompt
Last Known Configuration That Worked

Well, ask her why she put windows 98, until then try out those options and see if your comp still works. If not, then reformatt.

Alright. But how would I reformat? Someone said I needed to re upload Windows XP onto it. Should I do that or go for vista?

What computer is it/List the specs.
You can do it yourself, but if you have no idea how and you paid the person to fix the computer, get pissed off and make her do it (that's what I'd do).

Good idea.
It's a Compaq notebook with a Pentium 4 processor. I don't know about the Hard Drive, but the old Windows verson was Windows XP. We had to pay a bundle for her to fuck it up even more.

Personally, go for XP.
A P4 processor wouldn't handle Vista that well.
And, the graphics are probably crap too.

The boot menu (the screen you described) is default when you encounter a BSOD. Did you try any of the selections? Usually, if no hardware or software (related to Windows XP components) are corrupted, the "Last Known Configuration that Worked" option should work okay. If not, reboot and try entering it in Safe Mode.

When you get to installing, do XP. The Pentium 4 isn't such a big deal as a lack of driver support for your hardware.
By the way, remember to download the XP drivers for your computer.
