My Processor is Pentium 4 and when ever i boot up my PC it runs at 80C constant.

When I first opened the shell and took out the fan ontop of the heat sink there was some kinda paste (Didn't look like thermal paste) it was blue and lots of it (more than you would normally use for thermal paste) I don't know what that was, so if you could also tell me what that is it'd be great...
Any ways

I've re-applied thermal paste (Silicon based) but cleaning it with rubbing alcohol before applying it. After i've done all that my PC reports 80C and if I open few applications it goes upto 90s then 100s then boom, System turns off...

I don't know why the Thermal Paste doesn't work.

I've used an air compressor to clean out all the dust to help it (It's completely clean) The fan runs constant 3600RPM+ for the CPU.

I'm really pissed it never did this before, it used to idle at 60C now it idles at 80C which is too hot to imagine..

I've also applied everything carefully so I doubt the grease or the heatsink is the fault but still I'm not sure what's causing this, can anyone help me?

you are doing one of these two probably.

1. doing something horribly wrong with reapplying the paste.

2. fucking up the heatsink mount.

Silicon paste is really bad... You should check that your fan is working, your heatsink is seated properly and then you should use some silver based paste.

I couldn't find any other kind of Heat sink compound other than this silicon based, and it was 10 bucks from 'The Source' (Some company that works with Radio ShacK) After the night, it's now at 75C idle

Thanks for all your help guys, I've managed to fix the problem

You know the thing that the Heat Sink sits on, it's a little tray or what ever it's called and I had to screw the things up tight onto the mother board.

Then I re-applied thermal paste, and attached the Heat Sink, the results where very nice, 55 idle, 60 with FireFox and live opened Very Happy
