| im not a big computer whiz or anything but im pretty sure my computer isnt supposed to have to windows xp's, ive searched google, searched yahoo answers, there werer similar problems but they didnt really help because they all state that the 2nd windows xp contains all there OLD files, mines has all the files on my regular one, and they both take up the same amount of space, what i mean is, my original might take up 10 gb's (just an example) and my other one will take up 10 gb's making it add up and take up 20 gb's worth of space on my comp, and the thing is like updating or something, i mean, when i save something onto the original the 2nd one will aslso have that thing saved on to it, all the files are the same, if i download on one it goes onto the other as well, and since its combined in terms of space it takes up a shitload of useless space on my comp. help plz? and also try to explain alot more than u would usually have to do, im not to smart on computer talk, so dont use all those big words and abbreviations and stuff. Please and Thank you

Sounds like you have a RAID 1 configuration up.

hm, thx for that information, it fits perfectly to whats happening to me, but is ther any way to get rid of it? i didnt read the whole article on the raid thing, i only erad the different types of it, 1-10 or w/e

Reformatting a drive is going to wipe all data on the drive. The outcome will not be pleasant since the drives are mirrored.
Also, I don't know much about RAID configurations other than the fact that some can be configured through XP utilities [like RAID 5], otherwise the rest are done with hardware. If it is a family computer, ask your father or whoever if they had someone service it so the 2nd drive maintains a constant backup.
I would probably advise against undoing the RAID configuration if someone else set it up. Do you have any programs that are constantly backing up your files? Something like Norton Ghost, for example.

its not a family computer but my dad did have it fixed a while back, but hes gone, went to a diff country for a while,, the only thing i can do is get an expert to maybe look at it, i know a guy for that, and no i dont think have anything backing up my files

You can break up the array in your BIOS setup.
When you boot up your computer it'll tell you to press something like ESC, F2 or DEL to enter setup. Press the button. Find something that talks about RAID and disable it. You should then have two fully functioning independent drives with copied data. Reformat your 2ndary drive to recover the space.
Let your expert friend handle it, though. You might mess something up that could render your computer unable to boot.

First check if your C:\ has a folder called "windows.old" if yes then you have 2 windows installations.
RAID 1 also known as mirroring will only show a single C:\ within "My Computer".
The "mirror" drive is invisible from view and the user cannot access it.
The drive only kicks in if the primary drive is physically disconnected has failed to operated normally (a failing/dead hdd).
There are a few ways to verify if you got a RAID setup.
1. After the initial post and before the execution of ntosknrl.exe (bootscreen) A RAID bios should appear telling you if your RAID is functioning or not.
2. Head into bios to see if "RAID" is enabled or set to any of the HDDs.
3. Check out "Disk Management" inside windows to see if your disk are set to "Dynamic" as "Windows RAID" requires all hdds to be converted to dynamic.

What i think is the problem is he has a boot.ini file with two options to go to the same OS.. press on the start button, and press run, then type in msconfig. and then select the boot tab, this should tell you if you have more than one of the same bootups. lol
