|
|
| so right now im building a computer, in the future, like 1-3 years if i were to put in new mobo, processor, and video card, would i still keep everything on my HDD? and if i were also to install a new operating system at the same time, how could i keep the files on my HDD without the new OS deleting it?

The data on your hard drive has nothing to do with the other components of your build.
What you're talking about (keeping an installation of an operating system and being able to boot into another) is called dual(or multi)-booting. You must resize the original partition (part of the hard drive set aside for the installation) and make a new one with the freed up space. Then you make the new partition and install the operating system there. End result, two partitions, two operating systems.

You would need to back up the files that you want to keep on a separate partition or alternate media, install the new operating system, and restore the files wherever you want them.

Yes. | yes to flashdrive or yes to keeping files? and if yes to keeping files, r u 100% sure? | If all your information is stored on the hard drive (for that's where information is stored), you need to transfer the files to the new HDD somehow. That could mean connecting both, installing Vista on the new one, and taking files from it, or putting whatever you need to a usb/flash drive and copying them back to the new installation on the 1TB drive.
