64 bit operating systems are only able to be installed on computers with CPUs that support 64-bit architecture. The operating system will be able to use more than the little-over-3GB memory of a 32-bit OS. Often, programs that process a large amount of data have a 64-bit version that is able to perform better than the 32-bit.

I know I didn't answer your first post, but i would recommend Vista Ultimate 64bit. When I had 32bit, it ruled compared to Home Premium. And i have 4GB RAM, so 64bit can only be even more awesome.
Other than that, Windows 7 x64 BETA.

If your computer was built with XP, I recommend you don't go to Vista (for best performance).

like he said, it depends on your hardware. choose your hardware and then determine whether or not it would be better to use a 64-bit or 32-bit version of windows.

ok, i'll try not to facepalm. what i meant is would a 64-bit OS increase the performance of your system and let you take full advantage of your hardware. like if you got 6gb of RAM, that would be useless on a 32-bit system.

If the option is available to you, 64-bit is better. HOWEVER, I'd advise against x64 XP since it's got compatibility issues.

I assumed you knew the context of a sixty-four bit operating system when you asked about them... every version of most newer Windows and Linux operating systems has a 32-bit and 64-bit version. That includes XP. >_>
