You can do a backup of it by exporting, but there is no point as when you format and reinstall your registry will be different than the one before.

No point in backing up the registry.
I do back up AppData though.

Restoring an old registry wouldn't do much but slow your system down. Most changes (besides tweaks) are made at program install.
