I read somewhere that files can mask themselves as something harmless (.text), but actually be an .exe
Is there any way to check what type of file it really is?

enable the option that lets you see the extension, then read it.
then have fun running virus.txt.exe.

Go to any folder > tools > Folder options > View > un-tick "Hide extesions for known file types"

So the file ended up being a legit .avi
And I scanned it, didn't find anything bad.
Are there any other precautions I should take before opening it?

No, it's not porn. It's a movie.
Not something popular like The Dark Knight for example; something that millions of defenseless kids download every day.
It's an off-the-wall sundance flick.

| You can't put a virus in a .avi. Well, there was an exploit but it was patched. As long as its not *.avi.exe, you're fine.

| I hate how it's default in explorer for it to "Hide extensions for known file types". I also hate that you have to hit alt to drop-down the menu (by default). In my opinion, mainstream operating systems (ie. Windows) are going in entirely the wrong direction. Discuss.

I think the fact that google gave me nothing, and I had to ask here is a problem.

Windows is following in the footsteps of Macintosh.
Protecting the average end user from complex and dangerous things like file extension!

You are horribly wrong. It is possible to attach a virus into just about any file.
Just a correction so people won't think that .avi files can't contain viruses.
