If I hold down the power button to turn of my computer can that hurt it? If so, what does it do exactly to hurt it.

Many things can go wrong but usually they dont
stuff like loss of files, hard drive errors, etc
unless its like superfrozen then you should do that or else wait that 10seconds

Nothing bad will happen to your computer physically. If you have a program open unsaved (or a browser with tabs), sometimes it's not given enough time to save them, but that's not a huge deal (usually!). When you turn on windows, there may be some sort of screen to check your storage drive(s) or a menu to choose options of boot. Just skip the first or "Start Windows normally" for the second.

I've had a corrupt HD after switching my pc off at the wall before it finished shutting down.

anything left in the write cache is going to be lost, potentially corrupting whatever it may be.

otherwise, NTFS (or any modern filesystem) will generally be good about it, and you shouldn't really run into issues.

just press the power button once, and windows should just quickly shut down with no questions asked.
