GOM Player, VLC Media Player

Use VLC Media Player (for internal codecs) or K-Lite Mega Codec pack w/ Media Player Classic (for external codecs).
I feel that Media Player Classic performs better than VLC, you can get what you want out of it more easily.

If you jsut want to play only .AVI, then use Windows Media Player. It comes with windows, so no download is required.
