So I'm playing GTA IV, and after a while, it locks up. The time seems almost random, but I think my system lock-ups are associated with the amount of stress on put on my system. Symptoms are major audio glitching seconds before the lock-up (dead, looping sound that you would hear before a BSOD-style crash), however, I can still play around during that time. My system doesn't enter BSOD, so I can't debug it either; my only option is to hard reboot. The same thing happens in Prince of Persia. Audio glitching is also evident in SWBF2, but it returns to normal after a while, and I can continue playing. I haven't tested with FO3 yet though.
At the settings I play for each of the games, I get very smooth gameplay, so it's not a matter of system performance.
Event Viewer only gives me an "unexpected system shutdown" error for every time it happens, which is obviously what happened.
My best guess is that my power supply doesn't provide enough output for my system during extreme stress, but it doesn't seem completely reasonable giving that I can still play a bit after the audio glitching and before the freeze up.

What are the specs of your machine?
Have you tried a system health report or similar?

I got some suggestions, could be heating problem, or your system gets to low power (you need a better psu).

this used to happen to me on an ATI card i had a while back, on CSS after random times it would just stutter sound then the whole PC froze i had to pull the cord to get it off. i had a temp fix for it which was playing CSS in windowed mode which sucked allot...
i was told it was a problem with the sound hardware acceleration try putting that down to none never fixed my problem but its worth a try.
or try a newer gfx driver i never found out what fixed the problem but after a few formats i realized CSS played fine on full screen was still the same PC only thing different was i formatted and probably put different drivers in i also under clocked my gfx.

After switching out my PSU, Prince of Persia is running good, with no problems. I'll test GTA IV now.
Edit: Switched it out for another PSU...

May I ask why how the fuck you get on your computer when you don't get any power.
