|
|
Can you guys come up with the best bang for buck desktop build? 3DMark will be used as an indicator of performance.
Example: Build A costs $250. It gets 5000 3DMarks. That's 20 marks/dollar.
Build B costs $500 and gets 8000 3DMarks. That's 16 marks/dollar.
Build C costs $2000 and gets 44000 3DMarks. That's 22 marks/dollar.
Winner: $2000 build.
Quality doesn't matter, but the system must last at least 6 months, whether OCed or not. Mobo features don't matter, such as ExpressGate and stuff. Overclocking is allowed, so it helps the 3DMark score if the mobo can get a better OC. HDD space or speed doesn't matter so cheapest possible. Case with fans and extra heatsinks, etc. must be included. This affects OC ability because of increased/decreased airflow.
Btw, this is for a friend. He wants to get the most out of his money. He will be playing games. Dual core or quad core doesn't matter, as long as it gets more 3DMarks.

Price is a factor, right?
I recommend that you go to a site like CyberPowerPC.com and find a model there. You'll be able to get a higher-quality pc than an OEM computer, if that's what you're working with.
What games does your friend play? If it's higher-end games, the first two probably won't do too well. The 2000 dollar one is probably overkill if you're getting it for a friend. You can buy/get a pc for $1000 that will do well for gaming.

44000 3dmarks in what revision?
that sounds hideously out of proportion.

3DMark05 seems reasonable, the "best" setups in 3DMark06 can only hit a good 33k. Vantage is a whole other story.
If your client is requesting the best gaming performance, ask what games he's going to run. Building a computer to the best specs for performance based on a synthetic benchmark isn't what I would call effective use of money.

Those marks are probably because systems with lower specs can't do lots of the tests.
What I was trying to say was, build more for use and not for bang:buck.

He has a 50" LCD TV and he wants to play games on it at 1920x1200 maxed out. for the next 2-3 years. He would like to play are Crysis (+Warhead), Left 4 Dead, GTA IV, Far Cry 2, Fallout 3, CoD 4 + WaW, basically all FPS games that come out in the future. 30 FPS what he considers "smooth" gameplay.
I'm not buying OEM. I'm probably going to build it. As long as it accomplishes these goals, then it's fine. He wants it to be as cheap as possible because he's on a budget (college).

Is there a budget in mind?
You could go with a Q9550 and some good crossfire/SLi cards, or wait for the new AMD CPUs to come out so i7 prices drop. If you did the latter and got the cheapest i7, he'll be set for quite a while.

I get 11k with my 400$ build.
3dmark 06, I would suggest use the 06 or vantage.
Other are outdated and not working propperly with new products.

A good setup can let him play current games max out for the next 2-3 years, but it does not guarantee he will be play the games coming out in 2-3 years at 1920x1200 on max.
A core i7 920
6GB DDR3
P6T Deluxe
Seagate SAS
HD 4870 X2

Exactly, i've been saying that alot.
Also a computer wont hold longer that 1year in preformance then all
applications need so much more new hardware.
It will probleby work but either bad or slow.

You're saying that a computer won't last a year? Few applications take the full potential of a computer, especially a high-end one. Otherwise, besides professionals, no one would bother buying it.
If your windows is slow, reformat. It very likely will NOT be new software holding you down with an i7 920.
