If you're considering Core i7, the 920 model looks a lot better in terms of price/performance. So no, it's not really worth $1000 unless you're an enthusiast.
However, I may argue that the unlocked multiplier does help, for record breaking that is. For most people though, even for the majority of overclockers, an upwards locked multiplier works just fine.

Not really. The one that is on newegg for under $300, the 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz is great in performance when put to the same clock as CPUs with a higher stock rating. Check around on google and Tom's Hardware for great benchmarks and reviews.

Don't get the $1,000 cpus their a waste of money and it's for those who
has brains growing out of their asses.
When a newer cpu comes out their performance will be useless.
The QX6850 which ran at 3GHz with a 1333FSB and 8MB of L2 cache cost
$1,020
The Q9550 ran at 3GHz with a 1333FSB and 12MB of L2 cache just cost $319.99. Plus it's build on the newer process 45nm as compared to the QX6850 which is build on the older 65nm process.

Yeah, the only reason I could see to buy an Intel Extreme chip is if you're going to go for a record... not very practical a thing to do.

Definitely not worth it. With EE chips, you're paying 3x as much for a 3% increase in speed.
