if you buy that OEM it will cost around 600-900 depending on brand and type of RAM like 800 and 1088 mhz would cost a lot more than 667 mhz RAM.

Core2Quad x4 means he wants to get 4 of them... He wont be able to put 4 on one motherboard and probably means what you are saying...
but he said it wrong....
And it probably shouldnt cost more than 1k... maybe 1.5k?

As long your not going to do SLI or CrossFire then it's okay to whatever board you pick, but if your going to to SLI or CrossFire, make sure you get the certified boards.
The HD4870 X2 can be used on any type of motherboard as long your not planning to run CrossFire X.

You can easily build a computer like that for under or about $1200. With all the other crap OEMs advertise your computer to be as, they might charge in excess of $2000.

CPU:
- OEM you're looking at $179.
- New you're looking at $189. With a price different of only that much, I'd spring for the new.
Sub Total: $189
RAM
You can get two sets of 4GB of G Skill RAM for about $50 each. Depending on what brand you like, but G Skill is a pretty good brand. (And I'm sure you already know this, but since you want 8 GB you'll have to use Vista x64 or XP x64 since the 32-bit version of XP can only handle up to 4) Thanks for pointing that out Cheetah
Sub Total: $289
Video Card
Depending on the manufacturer you're looking at $519 and up.
Sub Total: $808
PSU
This all depends on what form factor you are using. I'm going to assume that the mobo and case are ATX (if not, just let me know). Depending on the manufacturer you're looking at anywhere between $20 and $160 but since you're gonna be using SLI, you're gonna have to find one that is compatible. There is a very nice Rosewill 550W SLI ready PSU for $60 after an instant rebate.
Sub Total: $868
Hard Drives
Again I'm going to make an assumption here that you're looking for a SATA drive. A Western Digital Caviar Black 500 GB hard drive with a 32MB cache will run you $75. So for a pair you're looking at $150.
Sub Total: $1018
Motherboard
I was able to find two on NewEgg. One for $149 the other for $99. The $99 one is opened box (which may explain the lower price).
Grand Total: $1167
This is just for the parts that you mentioned and does not take into consideration a case and other peripherals. Hope this helps. Oh, and I found all these prices over at NewEgg.

He does not need to get a CrossFire mobo. He is using a 4870X2. That's 1 card. He also doesn't need a Crossfire/SLi compatible PSU because it's only 1 card.
Also, why would you want 2x500GB hard drives? Buy a 1TB hard drive and it's cheaper.

True, but if he wants to add on later and get another card, he's going to need the compatible items.
1TB drive would be cheaper, though, unless you're concerned about backing up your data on a completely separate drive.

Sigh, getting tired of people spreading this misinformation. XP64 can handle up to 128GB, Vista is not necessary to recognize more than 4GB RAM.
