They're pretty close, although overall, the HD 4850 is faster. The competition is more 9800GTX+ vs. HD 4850. The HD 4850 sits between the 9800GTX and the 9800GTX+ in terms of performance (I think).

I would go for a 4850. I have a question, what about tow 9800GTs that are SLI clipped? Would 4850 still be better/

I'd still say the HD4850 would be considered 'better'.

4850 is better, if you see here:
