|
|
Boost your Internet!
Before you proceed...
You will need to do a Speedtest. You can do one at speedtest.net. Without any active programs hogging your bandwidth, test your connection and write it down on a piece of paper or remember your result. You will then compare it with the end result.
OpenDNS
If you don’t know what DNS is, here it is. DNS (Domain Name Servers) is a service that converts the website you type into the address bar into a numerical figure with dots in it (also known as the IP address) in which the Internet servers can decipher and take you to that page. Your ISP is the likely user of DNS servers. Even corporate agents have them too.
OpenDNS is a popular DNS service which not only does what a normal DNS does, but it allows you to have more freedom over what you do with normal pages. It can filter phishing sites from real ones, protect you from sites you’d rather not go to, and act as a Google Search.
Using OpenDNS is quite simple. All you need to do is to go to OpenDNS and hit the ‘Get Started’ button. Select whether you are setting it up on your computer or router. Or, if you want the straight fix, here are the DNS servers:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
Once you have that done, proceed to Step 2. Sign up for an account. Head for your Dashboard once you have done that. Go straight for Settings, and enter the required details there. If you have a dynamic IP (dialup, low-MB ADSL, etc.), download their IP detector. Once that is done, go to shortcuts. This is where time can matter. For example, if you typed ‘cef’ into the address bar, it would return ‘forum.cheatengine.org’, provided you have set up the shortcuts. Mail could be for Hotmail, etc. As soon as that is ready, you are complete.
This isn’t the full OpenDNS. If you really want to, go set up your filters (sorry adults). Experiment until you get bored. Just remember those shortcuts.
Software
You may want to try the following software
DAP - Turbocharges your downloads by up to 400%.
SG.NET TCPOptimizer - Tweak your TCP settings to max potential.
Webaccelerator - Google's new Web Accelerator that saves pages on your computer. ~Cryoma
Hint: Instead of loading a homepage like google.com, why not speed it up so it is even quicker? If your homepage was Google.com, why not put http://208.67.219.231 as your homepage? That removes the need for a DNS to convert the address to the IP.
Speedtest yourself and see how fast your internet is now. Has is improved? If you like the result, then there you have it. If you dislike it, bad luck.
Will be updated soon. Enjoy!

OpenDNS would only help if your DNS servers are shitting the bed.
The other programs are shit.
Just get DownThemAll if you need a download manager that splits.
Vista automatically handles everything networking, and the only think you may need to change is your receive window under XP, and make sure your MTU is right.
