|
Im helping a friend choosing a mobo+processor+gpu
I said that the HD4850 is great and that he should go with that
But the site i recommended him says it uses PCIe x16 2.0
And the mobo i choose does only say PCIe x16
Will the GPU fit in that mobo?

Yes the standard claims to be both forwards and backwards compatible where PCI-E is concerned

If a board only has 1 PCIe x16 it does not mean it's not PCIe 2.0
You have to look at the chipset in order to see if it's 2.0 or not.
The following chipsets with PCIe 2.0 support
Intel: P45, X32, x48
Nvidia: nForce 7 series
AMD: 700series
Note: Some boards may have their slots not operate at full speed.
e.g. Your board may have a physical PCIe x16 slot, but it only operates at x8, x4, or x1.

But thats nothing to do with the original question, where he asked whether a PCI 2.0 card would be compatible with PCI 1.0 slot, which it is. This isn't about bus bandwidth. No need to confuse the situation kls85.

I'd get an sli mobo where it has 2 pcie x16's just in case he wants to upgrade to sli.

Yes I know he's concerened that his PCIe 2.0 card may not work with a PCIe 1.1 slot so your assured to him it will because the gpu is also backwards compatible.
What I have added is he cannot assume for all boards, if it only says "PCIe x16" and not "PCIe x16 2.0" then it means it does not support 2.0
I've got a Asus Rampage Formula and for my box is just says
"2x PCIe x16 slots, support at full x16, x16 speed" not "2x PCIe 2.0 x16 slots, support at full x16, x16 speed" but it's got a x48 chipset so PCIe 2.0 is supported.
And about the bandwidth some boards does that so I'm just trying to warn him to read all specs properly before taking the plunge.
@OP what motherboard did you pick?
