It won't slowly pack-up megabyte by megabyte It'll eventually just die. You won't be able to bootup without any RAM in the machine. Basically.

Not really. If it was really intensely damaged, you're better of replacing it.

What was the program? And so, basically, your RAM just 'disappeared'?
I'm giving that a doubt ...

How are you checking this 'amount'? What was this 'program'? And are you sure its RAM your talking about and the page/swap file that windows uses as virtual memory?
RAM is cheap as chips anyway, at least for a replacement for what you have. Replace it, and take the opportunity to upgrade too if your PC will have it. Use something like Everest, Sisoft Sandra or Belarc to get more info about what RAM you have exactly and other specs

I was just taking a guess at the 1gb. But I only got 2 chips of 1gb, so I think the one doesnt work.

Probably, although you'll likely experience freezes/crashes or a non-booting PC if that were the case. Check it out for sure with one of those apps I mentioned. It will also be worth you downloading Memtest+ (google for it) and burning the .ISO onto a cd. That will create a bootable CD that you can then used to test your memory before windows loads. It will let you know if something is up

I actually already downloaded one of those me tests, but once it got to the 13th step it started to go very slow. How long do those usually take?

Should be a consistent speed all the way through. Depends on your system. An hour maybe tops as a very rough estimate. Did it throw up any errors?
