I was wondering, if I formatted my flash drive and then extracted the ISO contents to it (Knoppix STD's ISO), couldn't I use something like syslinux to make it bootable?

make your flash drive bootable?
isn't there an option in your BIOS to boot from USB?

I'm not so sure that you can just extract the ISO onto your flash drive and choose to boot off of it?

You have to make your usb bootable first. then you should be able to just copy and paste the files over.

Well, I format my USB to FAT32 and then create a bootsector onto it. But as soon as I try to go into my flash drive it becomes "unformatted." Also, as soon as I'm done creating the bootsector is that it, or do I have to do something else, because I don't get Step 4

I don't think that is the way it works.

Most of these guides teaches you how to create a bootable USB flash drive in the from of a start up disk [Windows 98].
This is useful for updating bios, or do other things that's required to be
under dos.
That HP utility is the one I've used on 3 differenty non-HP flash drives and they all work.
Here, I've found the latest HP USB boot utility
HP USB Creator Utility

Even if you make the disk bootable with the above utility, you still need to have a BIOS that supports booting from USB, and you need to enable the setting.

I used HP's utility and this is what I have on my flash drive (this is what should be on there...right?)
But now what? Do I just extract the contents of knoppix-std-0.1.iso to my flash drive or do I need to make a new folder or what?

i don't think that you can boot off a usb on all computers, some computers have to wait until you get into your OS before the usb ports start working (my older computers at home).
