I'm looking into upgrading my PC instead of spending $800-1000 on a laptop, probably the latest and best parts like video cards, I kind of really just want to add as much memory and RAM as possible I can fit on my computer, as well as changing my fan to a better and much more quieter one. ... 500$ for 2GB ram? LOL.
LOL? LOL!

@OP, you have a similar computer, if not the Intel equvilent of my own.

1GB ram DDR. Cheap, powerful and great. I'm using one of these sticks on my computer right now and it gave it a huge boost [from 512Physical as well.] Go ahead and buy 4 if you like. If your board is the equvilent to mine, you should have 4 slots.

Your CPU socket is LGA 775. You could get a nice Dual Core for a small amount and get a noticable boost over your P4.

As for GPU, you should have a PCI-E x16 [not 2.0] slot available.
This look alright.

I think I can only upgrade to 2GB, as for the processor is that the best I can get?

You could get a Quad Core since its a LGA775 socket, but I wouldn't bother. Dual Core would suffice for you. Then again, I'm unsure.

Would any Dual Core processor be fine, oh and are you sure I can get 4 1GB sticks? That would mean 4 GB overall.

I don't know. I don't know your proc, so I wouldn't be able to tell.
IMO, I'm doing great with just 1.5GB Physical seeing as I don't [or can't] do anything extensive [shity-er proc and the same IGP you have.]
2Gigs will do you a good deal. Just get two sticks of that RAM and put them in. Leave your 512 in and if it picks up 2.5GB, then you know you can add more if you want to.

Do I need to take my PC to a local PC shop to get the sticks installed, or is it fairly easy that I can do it on my own, as well as the processor?

RAM sticks are easy. Line up the pins and apply a small amount of force until they snap into place.

CPU is more difficult. You need to remove the heatsink and remove the CPU from its slot.
Then do the reverse for the new CPU.

GPU- same thing as ram. Just put it into place.

I'll probably have the RAMs installed with the processor at my local PC shop, as well as the GPU. Thanks for your help. Very Happy

While his board may support Core 2 chips, more likely than not it won't since it sounds like an older OEM board.

Unfortunately, that PSU is too weak to handle anything bigger as far as a video card is concerned. I would reccomend at a minimum getting a new PSU, graphics card, and some more RAM.

Though ideally I would just build a new budget machine entirely, you can build a very nice machine for $500. Let us know how much you wanna spend and what you wanna do with the machine.
