First off, it's dual processor, not duo.
Secondly, the p4 is single core, dual threaded. The reason you saw two "cores" before was because of HyperThreading, which is a useless gimmick that generally does nothing or only makes performance worse.
tl;dr? It's fine the way it is now.

Run CPU-Z and make sure it was reporting correctly to begin with.

dual core is not the same as have 2 cpus. And it is really just usefull for servers to have more than 1 cpu.

So if you have P4 you should turn off HyperThreading?

I know he said Duo, that's why I corrected him. He doesn't have a Core 2 Duo, nor is "duo core" a proper term. Regardless, he doesn't have any product of the Core 2 Duo family, meaning he was using the term "duo core" as a substitute for "dual core."

From my experience, it either slows things down, or just doesn't have any positive effect. I've seen a lot of people say the same.
Try it with it enabled and disabled, and see what works best for you. I would generally recommend disabling it on a new install. However, if you already have an OS installed and HyperThreading enabled, to disable it you'd first need to set the processor driver back to ACPI Uniprocessor PC or you'll fuck things up.
