Well, I finally decided it's time to build myself a new computer. I haven't had to do this in some time, so I most likely fucked up somewhere. I wouldn't be surprised if there is an incompatible part (I'm looking at the hard drive...). If you know of a place to get something cheaper, or you would recommend something else, I am up for suggestions. A cheaper monitor would be nice.
Also, would it be worth it to buy a DDR3 compatible motherboard for when DDR3 becomes a little more mainstream?

The GTX 280s aren't really good when it comes to price/performance ratio.
Also, if you're not planning to run SLI, you might want to go with a 750i motherboard instead, just to save some money.

I'm considering getting a 22" monitor for just over $200; instead of the GTX 280 I may SLI two 8800 GTs.
The new total comes to $1,721.87 with the above changes.
Anyone else have anything to add?

It all depends on what you are using it for. I think using DDR3 now is worth it.

I would, but dorm rooms have very thin walls... and to be honest I will probably be using my iPod headphones most of the time.
When I get my own place I might consider spending more on speakers.

The problem with DDR3 is that I would need to find a new mother board that would support it. Also, even though the MHz is about double DDR2, the timings are horrid. The ones I have are 4-4-4-12, wheras the top of the line DDR3 have about 7-7-7-20. Also it is more expensive.

Speakers: I would get a cheaper sound system, and invest more on the other parts, especially since you'll be using headphones too.
Monitor: It's pretty good, but 5ms is a bit slow, but it's not too bad. It's acceptable.
Graphics card: If it's possible, get the dual slot variant of the 8800GT eVGA offers. BTW: 2x 8800GTs should equal or surpass one GTX 280.
Hard drive: I would recommend you get 2 500GB drives, it might cost less and you can use RAID for data backup or decreased read/write times.
Motherboard: Take a look at the eVGA 750i SLI FTW edition, it's pretty good. It offers most of the 780i's features at a lower price.
CPU Fan: It's pretty good, but I know more effective CPU coolers.

What happened to the GTX280, 8800 gt is fine but id go with the 1gb version definetely. Heaps more speed increase

8800GT 1GB = No performance increase from a similar 8800GT 512MB
A 256-bit bus won't effectively utilize more than 512MB of RAM. The GTX 280 isn't very awesome (bad performance/price ratio), and even some sources state that it's slower than the 9800GX2.

nVidia boards aren't near as good as their Intel counterparts, and pretty much all of nVidia's current line of cards gives a terrible price/performance ratio.
Get a good Intel based board, and a pair of 4850's, or a pair of 4870's if your budget allows.
DDR3 is a waste of money and performs on par or worse than DDR2 for about 4x as much money, no thanks.
Also remember that Nehalem is coming in November...

I had heard people had issues with this board (DOA, boot problems, etc.), and I have also heard that the 780i doesn't have these issues.

You are the only person I have have ever heard with this opinion. Why ATI instead of nVidia?

In the high-end enthusiast section (GTX 280, 9800GX2), NVIDIA cards offer bad price/performance ratios (compared to ATI's offerings).
NVIDIA's 8800GT offers tons of value, if you get them at a good price. You can find an 8800GT for as low as $65 ($95-$30) these days after rebates, and an HD4850 as low as $140 ($175-$30-$15). The HD4850 is on average 13% faster than the 8800GT when tested in Crysis, World In Conflict, Call of Duty 4, and 3DMark06, but it's more than twice the price of the 8800GT using the prices I found.
2x 8800GTs in SLi will usually beat any single-card solution.
