My friend wants a laptop for his birthday and his grandparents are getting him the one he wants. But hes not "tech savvy", so I'm helping him to make sure he doesn't get a shit laptop. Anyway he plays guitar and wants to be able to record on his laptop. I just need to make sure that the hard drive spins fast enough to be able to handle the music recording. Does anybody have any manufacturer suggestions? Acer sucks majorly. I've dealt with a few Acer laptops and there was never a good experience with them.

I also don't think that the speed of the hard drive will matter, because the RAM and the cache on the HD can act as a barrier and temporary storage.
I can't think of why he'd 4gigs or RAM also...

Can get that laptop to better specs (excluding RAM, this can only have 2 gigs) for 600$ less than what I've seen the Ferrari 1100 for.

Also look at Lenovo, their laptop are amazing.
The Thinkpad's case is partially made out of titanium and Lenovo's customer service is godly.

It doesn't matter what Acer you start with, it will be an Acer in the end, and thus be shit.

Do you know the name program he plans to use?
And personally I would go with XP, but Vista Ultimate would be what he should go with if he plans to use Vista. Ultimate gives the user more control over the OS than the other versions do, and can be optimized better (IIRC).

Alienware is extremely overpriced, I would not recommend it. Anyways, his focus is on music, not gaming.

Go for a "custom" computer, as Mazeura suggested. It'll get you the most "bang-for-the-buck". You might want to try CyberPowerPC, and others.

Things you'll want in a laptop of that class is a good, fast dual core processor, 2GB of RAM (he won't use much more), and a 7200RPM drive at the least. If he can get an SSD, then that's preferred.

I've heard Lenovo is good (good computer and customer support), and there pricing is great too (better than competing Dell and HP). Apple has great customer support, and their computers are of good build, but are even more overpriced than Alienware. You could get something better for less than half the price on some of the models.

BTW: You can't get XP anymore, but you might find it in places other than the major retailers. I've heard you can also get an upgrade disc (XP to Vista), but I'm not sure if it goes to all computer builders.

yo superweapons, do u suggest sager notebooks? theyre about the same price as alienware, but i think the parts r better quality.

Sager still offers XP for their laptops!

(Don't know why... Didn't Microsoft mandate that XP can't be installed on new computers or something?)
