Hi,

without introductions I'd like to share with me OT knowledge, which you can find very useful.

As you most probably already know code hacking can be quite time consuming and sometimes (if you just use tutorials on making UCE) finding & replacing can be really boring.

That's why I'd like to introduce few tools that all of you can use (maybe some of you already know those).

First - file manager.

Efficent finding files you want to edit is key to improving your hacking speed.

I'd recommend Total Commander or TC PowerPack (this one comes with few addons like cdburner).

Basic features are double view, tabbed view built in file editor, intuitive keymapping (enter to run, f3 to view, f4 to edit, f5 to copy, f6 to move/rename), progressive search (by typing name of file you'll progressively move to file/files which fits), easy management of directories (those can be grouped by name, extension, date, anything you want).
Also home moves you to ".." which stands for "go to parent" so you can really move through filesystem like a lightning.

Shareware, but you can use it forever, it only nags you with a screen on start. As I run it almost always I see this screen once a day Wink

Second - launcher.

If you don't know what launcher is, or you think that it's tiny app that sits ontop of your other application - you're wrong.

FindRun Robot is application that will launch small window after pressing combination of keys (customizable). You type name of the app you want to launch and it will progressively show the results. Press "Enter" and you'll launch first application on list (yes it shows more then 1 result).
Also it uses heuristic engine, so if you launch one app quite often - it will get more points then app with similar (same?) name as you search.

Short example of this as I can't explain in easy.
For example you got shortcuts in your menu start like:
Test App [this points to home directory]
Test App Homepage
Test App Uninstall
Test App Executable

After searching for Test (it there aren't any other "Test" in your search paths) it will most likely return Test App [dir] as first result. But after you'll run Test App Executable first time it will get higher result thus after searching for test you'll get Test App Executable as first result.

More over - the more often you use app it's easier to find it.

It's donationware. If you register on their forum you'll get free key to use for 6 months. If you won't donate by then you'll get another (free) key to use for another 6 months.

After a year you'll get key for unlimited use.

And last but not least.

VIM - the text editor.

Those who knows it - nods with agreement. Those who don't - thinks - why the hell I need something other then notepad.

First of all VIM is made by touchtypists for touchtypist.
It's hard to learn how to use it, but it greatly rewards those who did it.

I'll show you it's power on dbk32.dpr editing.

You know that you have plenty of lines to change/replace. You can't use Actual replace, because that just don't work.

Imagine, that I can edit BOTH dbk32.dpr and DBK32functions.pas in 40 keystrokes. Yes. 40 keystrokes. Including shifts, ctrls, alts and everything that is on keyboard (or maybe except keyb. special keys when I want to change winamp track;))

There are many tutorials out there about vim. But before you'll take on it - i'll tell you - it is very complicated. And by very complicated I mean really - i'll show you keystrokes of basic copy-paste in next line with increment.

^ywop[Esc]p[Ctrl-"+"]

This makes from:

Code:
TEST011

Code:

TEST011
TEST012

If you'll do qq^ywop[Esc]p[Ctrl-"+"]q99@ you'll do that 100 times.

You want to check it sure - why not. There are many tutorials out there.
If you want to learn how to use vim to use it in CE edit - check it out, master basic tutorial and PM me. If interest will be I'll post some useful tips about editing (with explanation).

PS. Unfortunatelly, due spam protection I can't post any links. However those are quite easy to find using Google Smile
