im reformating, and i want to save my steam games.
should i just back up the .gcf's?

Uh...not sure what all files steam games contain, but I'd back up all the files to them to be sure it'll work again properly.

What is your reason for reformatting if I may ask?

When you reformat you can re-download your steam games.

Paying 40 bucks for several games is way better then buying a new computer. Either move those games to an external hard drive and reformat or just re-format and re-buy the games.
